Walter L. Shockey *
Walter “Red” Shockey, age 94, passed away at Doctors Hospital, Manteca. Born in Superior, Colorado, he had been a resident of Manteca for 65 years. He was raised in Colorado and at the age of 14 his family moved to southern California. Walter started out working in Fontana, California cutting hay with teams of horses. During the Great Depression be rode the rails. He married his wife Lenna on April 15, 1939 in Los Angeles, California prior to settling in the San Joaquin Valley. He was a former member of the California Trucking Association and Local Teamsters #439. He was a member of the “Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society.” He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and their achievements. He also enjoyed camping, the outdoors, gardening, traveling and “being on the road and seeing something different each day.” He had retired in 1982 as the owner of Shockey & Sons Trucking. Since his retirement, he became a Folk Artist, carving airplanes and framed artwork. He will be greatly missed by his family and all that knew him. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lenna Shockey; children: LeRoy Shockey of Oakland, Rita Olson of Manteca, Dennis Shockey and wife, Carolyn of Ripon, Russell Shockey and wife, Nikki of Manteca, and Wayne Shockey and wife, Jan of Modesto; sister, Pearl Stephens of Manteca; 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his siblings: the Late Jim Shockey, the Late Dave Shockey and the Late Ira Shockey. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home. Chapel service is Wednesday, March 12 at 11:00 a.m. P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home. Final resting place at Park View Cemetery.
