Shockey Gang

The Shockey Gang was known to counterfeit money before and during the Revolution. They were horse thieves as well. The Gang was well known up and down the Shenandoah Valley. Their hideout was up in the mountains that overlooked The Third Survey of Sarah’s Delight. It was said that Valentine could see his farm from the cave as the law burned his farm to get him to come out of hiding.

Other Shockey’s (in progress)

  • The murders of brothers Jacob and Samuel Shockey during the 1920s. The saga began with the shooting death of Jacob on the public road at Beartown on South Mountain, probably as the result of a love triangle. His brother Sam was convicted of the slaying, but people still debate his guilt. Sam soon escaped from prison, and eventually his brother Christian found his body lying on a boulder in the woods near Beartown. He had been shot and axed in the head. No one was ever prosecuted for the second murder.
