Jacob & Samuel Shockey

The murders of brothers Jacob and Samuel Shockey during the 1920s. The saga began with the shooting death of Jacob on the public road at Beartown on South Mountain, probably as the result of a love triangle. His brother Sam was convicted of the slaying, but people still debate his guilt. Sam soon escaped from prison, and eventually his brother Christian found his body lying on a boulder in the woods near Beartown. He had been shot and axed in the head. No one was ever prosecuted for the second murder.

The story is written about in “The Proceedings of the Potomac Street Irregulars” (2014) which is a study group in the Antietam Historical Association.
