James E Berry *

Amherst – , age 91, passed away on Sunday, March 20, in a care facility in Oklahoma City. The funeral services will be held on 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2022 at First Baptist Church in Amherst, Tx. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2022 at First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Amherst. Funeral arrangements are under the care of -Rose Funeral Home.

James Edward (J.E.) Berry was born February 28, in Amherst Texas to James Alexander and Ruby Ann (Shockey) Berry. J.E. grew up in Amherst, attending Amherst schools. He married Velvie Mae VanDoern on March 23, in Amherst, Texas. They were married almost 69 years until her death in 2018. J.E. worked 25 years for Petroleum Company. He also worked as an electrician for many years. He attended and graduated from Law Enforcement School at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. He was a police officer for Littlefield Police Department and then a deputy sheriff for Lipscomb, Texas for several years. He was then elected as Justice of the Peace in Lipscomb until retirement. He was a longtime member of FBC Amherst and served as a deacon for many years, being involved in various aspects of church minisgtry. J.E. and Velvie spent many happy years doing woodworking, traveling in their rv, and going to estate sales and garage sales. In , they moved to Town Village Independent Living, and J.E. lived there until his death.

J.E. and Velvie had four sons, Darrell Gene Berry, deceased. Bobby Berry and Kathy of Cashion Oklahoma James Brian Berry and Gwen of Victoria, Texas, and Clifford Dale Berry and Pam of Borger, Texas. They were also blessed with 12 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

J.E. is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 69 years, Velvie, one son, Darrell Gene and a half-brother, Jerry.
