Janet L Waugh *

Janet Lois Waugh, 83, of City, Kansas, passed away peacefully on January 11, . She was born on October 2, , in Houston, , to John and Ouida .

A lifetime resident of the community, Janet graduated from Turner High School in the class of 1959. She was a proud advocate for education and service, dedicating 24 years to the Kansas State Board of Education from 1999 to 2023, including two terms as chairperson and three terms as vice chairperson. She also served on the Turner Board of Education for 16 years.

Janet was deeply involved in her community, serving on local and state PTAs and co-founding the beloved “Turner Days” celebration. She was among the first inductees into the Turner Walk of Fame and was honored with the prestigious Governor’s Award in 2023, as well as an Education Award recognizing her lifelong commitment to improving schools.

As the owner of Sav-On Auto Sales, Janet was a trusted businesswoman in her community. Beyond her professional and civic accomplishments, she will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her family and her love for the Turner community.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ouida, and her husband of 15 years, Art Waugh. She is survived by her son, James ; her daughter, Julie (Karl); her half-brother, Jim Shockey; and her grandchildren: Janelle Wanner (Kevin), Skyler Anderson, John Sharp, Shelbi Anderson, and countless family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Maple Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Maple Hill Funeral Home, with a graveside service immediately afterward at Maple Hill Cemetery.
