John G Duckworth *

John Gilbert Duckworth, 96, of Vernon Twp., Meadville, passed away on January 20, 2025, at Marquette Hospice House.
John was born in Lonaconing, Maryland, on September 13, 1928, to the late Gilbert and Florence (Shockey) Duckworth. He married his beloved wife, the former Joyce Martin, on July 2, 1950. They were married for 72 years until she proceeded him in death on November 26, 2022.
Surviving are children; David (Connie) Duckworth of Shelby Twp., MI, Dan (Sharon) Duckworth of Meadville, and Carole (Steve) Fisher of Cochranton, grandchildren: Nathan, Isaac, John, Justin, Meghan, Patrick, Hannah, Jackie, and Jeremy, numerous great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
John was a simple man with many talents. He was a certified electrician and retired from PPG after a 40-year career that started in Maryland and ended in Pennsylvania when he retired. PPG later called him out of retirement to help build a new plant in China. John was also very talented with heating, plumbing and construction. He used these talents to help others – especially Grace United Methodist Church where he was very active over the years.
John served on the church Board, as well as many church committees. He also taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir. He served in the U.S. Army Band during the Korean War and had the honor to play the trumpet for many dignitaries around the world, and at many military special functions and funerals. He also played in concert bands and dance recitals for his daughters and helped to coach sports for his sons.
Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter Cathy Wilneff, and two granddaughters.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to ROSE AND WAID FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, INC., 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.
Calling hours will be from 10:00 – 10:45 AM on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Grace United Methodist Church, 828 N. Main Street, Meadville. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Richard Foland, Jr. officiating. The burial will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Thursdays for Jesus Children’s Ministry or Vacation Bible School at Grace United Methodist Church.
