Kevin L Shockey *
Kevin Lane Shockey, a 60-year resident of Marion, passed away Thursday August 18 surrounded by immediate family following a four-year battle with colorectal cancer.
Shockey was born to Linda and Jay Shockey in Marion on August 29, 1961. Shockey, a 1979 graduate of Marion High School, met his high school sweetheart, Lisa (Wickham) while miniature golfing with friends. During high school, Shockey passed his free time showing horses all over the Midwest. After high school he attended Ball State University to study TV broadcasting. Realizing he would make a greater impact in public service, Kevin began his career in public healthcare with a volunteer emergency medical technician position with the Van Buren Township Fire and Rescue Department.
Shockey began his 38-year career with Marion General in 1982 as an EMT before becoming a certified paramedic in 1985. Shockey completed registered nurses training in 1991 at Indiana University – Kokomo. Serving for 12 years as an RN in various critical care and cardiac departments within MGH he finally found his calling in the cardiac catheterization lab in 2003. Shockey truly cherished his time there, caring for patients, working with friends and training up and coming nurses in the cardiac field.
He was named nurse of the month in February 2015 and also Nurse of the Year. Shockey was active at St. Paul Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. When he wasn’t spending his weekends at the soccer field watching his two boys play, he was either camping at Grand Haven State Park in Grand Haven, Michigan or playing golf with friends at the Elks Country Club or making his way to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to watch several Brickyard 400’s and several Indianapolis 500’s.
Enjoying retirement life with his wife in Ormond Beach, Fla. he took his granddaughter to her first race, the Daytona 500. Shockey and his wife returned home to “keep on keepin on” his battle with cancer amongst local family, friends and former co-workers.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years Lisa (Wickham) Shockey; mother Linda (Pressler) Shockey; sister Melissa Shockey; sons Justin (Stacey) Shockey, Bryce (Neely) Shockey, and granddaughter Karter Shockey and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents and his father Jay Shockey.
His family is very excited to host a Celebration of Life on September 11 from 4-7 p.m. at the Elks Country Club. The family is inviting any family, friends and co-workers or anyone else who’s life has been touched by Kevin.
In lieu of flowers send donations to Lisa Shockey for a fund created for a memorial bench to be placed at the Marion Elks Country Club; or in the name of Kevin Shockey to Marion High School Alumni Association, PO Box 448, Marion, IN 46952 with a memo on the check for Shockey-Boys Soccer.
Arrangements are entrusted to Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 W. Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.
