Mary F Shockey *

Mary Frances , a beloved member of the Moorefield, WV community, passed away peacefully on December 31, , at the age of 70. She was born on February 28, 1953, in Petersburg, WV to Phillip Blaine and Lillian Josephine Wratchford. Mary Frances, affectionately known as “Fran,” was a cherished wife, sister, and friend to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

After graduating from Moorefield High School in , Fran pursued her passion for beauty and attended the Tri-State Beauty Academy in Cumberland, MD. She excelled in her studies, earning a perfect attendance award and honing her skills as a beautician. In , she embarked on her entrepreneurial journey by opening her own salon, aptly named “Frenchy’s.” For an impressive 45 years, Fran dedicated her time and talent to making others feel beautiful and confident.

Fran’s love for adventure and nature was fervent, and she shared countless joyful moments with her late husband, “Petie” Shockey, Jr. They found solace in their permanent lot at Wapocoma campground, where they created unforgettable memories during weekends and holidays for 23 years. Fran and Petie’s passion for exploration extended to the state parks of , where they embraced the beauty of nature and delighted in sharing these experiences with their nieces and nephews. Fran’s heart overflowed with a profound love for her community, as evidenced by her volunteer work with United Way, her dedicated sponsorship of the Girl Scouts for an impressive 42 years, her invaluable service as a Red Cross Crisis volunteer, and her pivotal role as a Director of Heritage Weekend.

Fran will forever be remembered for her unwavering kindness, infectious laughter, and genuine love for others. She leaves behind cherished memories for her surviving siblings, Jim B. Wratchford, Betty Arbogast, Mark Wratchford of Moorefield, WV, and Joan Foltz of Mathias, WV, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Service of Remembrance, celebrating the remarkable life of Mary Frances Shockey, will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, January 6, 2023 at the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren. Pastor D. J. will officiate the service, followed by the inurnment in Walnut Grove Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until time of services.
