IA STATE HIST LIB, DSM IA – MRS FRANK ROSS – Martha N Shockey was b 7/20/1859 at Lewisburg, near the western edge of Wayne Co, IA and died Sunday evening 10/11/1925 at 5 o’clock, having attained the age of 66 years 2 months and 21 days. On 1/5/1881, she was united in marriage to Frank Ross, to which union six children were born, the oldest of which, Hugh Earnest, preceded her in death a little over a year ago. This life that is departed was spent, with the exception of a brief residence in Decatur County, wholly in Wayne Co, and this long period of 66 years residence here, meant that she was familiar with many of the privations to pioneer life. Almost thirty years of this time was spent on the home farm near Corydon. As a result of this strenuous life, illness overcame Mrs. Ross some 8 years ago, culminating in an attack of peritonitis which resulted in her death. She was conscious to the very last, apparently realizing that the end was near. The funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by Rev J Newton Sours. Burial was made in the Corydon cemetery.
