Syra J. Stout, 58, of Lafayette, died after a crash on U.S. 231 this morning.
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning, sending both drivers to the hospital and later killing the driver who reportedly had the right-of-way.
UPDATE at 4:05 p.m.: The female driver of a car involved, 58-year-old Syra J. Stout of Lafayette, has died from injuries sustained in Tuesday morning’s crash.
A report came in between 9 and 9:30 a.m. of a two-vehicle crash at (new) U.S. 231 and Veterans Memorial Parkway, also known as County Road 350 South. In photos, you can see a white Chevy Malibu and a silver PT Cruiser collided, sending both cars flying in different directions. Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Sgt. Andy Cree said Stout was driving the white Malibu west on Veterans Memorial Parkway, attempting to make a left-hand turn south onto US 231. Sgt. Cree says witnesses reported the silver PT Cruiser, driven by 62-year-old Melvin Springer of Crawfordsville, ran the red light at the intersection and T-boned the Malibu as it was about to turn left onto 231. Sgt. Cree said emergency crews had to extricate Stout, who was trapped in her car, unresponsive. She was taken immediately to St. Elizabeth East Hospital. Sgt. Cree says Springer was conscious and alert, but was also taken to a hospital – St. Elizabeth Central – for his injuries. There is no word from investigators yet as to whether Springer will be cited for running a red light. Our News 18 crew on the scene says the intersection was severely backed up as crews restricted traffic for the crash investigation. As of 11 a.m. the intersection was back open to traffic.
