Richard Henkel *
Richard (Dick) Henkel, 79, died September 28, 2005, of pancreatic cancer, at home while surrouned by his loving family.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World war II (DE 700) and graduate of Kent State University (1954), Dick worked at R&J Furniture, O’Neil’s, and Chrysler. Teamed with his wife, in retirement Dick delivered meals to shut-ins in Akron and Canton for a quarter of a century, traveled the world on a shoe-string budget, and shared the harvests of their well-tended gardens with neighbors, friends, and family. Dick volunteered as Santa, read two papers and many magazines daily, and was a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailor’s Association, North Canton Eagles Post 2223, V.F.W., and American Legion.
The son of the late Herbert and Hilda (Fry) Henkel, Dick is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris (Bowers); children, Joyce (Ed) Deskin, and Rick (Amy), Roy, Ronald (Lexanne), and Nancy Henkel; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Donald Henkel of Michigan and Lyle (Donna) Henkel of Green; sister-in-law, Louise Henkel, formerly of North Canton; and a gracious assembly of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Schneeberger Funeral Home, 2222 Fulton Rd. N.W., Canton. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Jacob’s Cemetery, 1460 State St., Cairo, Pastor Duane Crabbs officiating.
