John Ernest Shockey *

John Ernest Shockey, 97, of 919 Dewey Ave., Hagerstown, Md., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 4, , at Broadmore Assisted Living, Hagerstown.

Born Saturday, April 13, , in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Jacob E. Shockey and the late Nellie C. Shockey.

He was a graduate and the last surviving member of Hagerstown High School class of 1925. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. U.S. Army in 1942 and remained on active duty until 1945, serving in the Aleutian Campaign against the Japanese in Alaska. He also continued to serve in the reserves until 1960 and was commissioned lieutenant colonel.

He founded Shockey Furniture in 1932 and continued working until his retirement in 2000. He was a life member of the Hagerstown Church of the Brethren. He also was a member of Kiwanis Club, Eagles Club, BPO Elks Lodge 378, Retailers Association of Hagerstown, Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, Retired Officers Association, a life member of Fountain Head Country Club, S&M Hunting Club, American Rod and Gun Club, Greencastle Rod and Gun, Woodmont Rod and Gun Club, a life member of the National Rifle Association and participated in Franklin County Trap League.

He was an active sportsman, enjoying hunting and fishing, and competitive trap and skeet shooting. He participated in events in , Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida and at the National Trap Competition in Vandalia, , where he won many awards and trophies.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Shockey, in , and is survived by his second wife, Elizabeth Scott Shockey; daughter, Lindley S. of Ponte Verda Beach, Fla.; and grandson, Fred W. Rhodes II of Jacksonville, Fla. He was preceded in death by a sister, Belle M. Flook.

Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at 10 a.m. at Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, 15 S. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Edward L. Poling officiating.

Family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, on Friday, Aug. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, 15 S. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
