Martha W. Horak *

Martha M. , age 98, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Friday, January 29, 2021 at Lantern Park Specialty Care in Coralville, Iowa.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa with Father Bernie Weir officiating. Calling hours will be held from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Services will be livestreamed on the Jones & Eden Facebook page. Memorials have been established for St. Catholic Church. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Martha was born July 4, 1922 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Cleo and Angela (Dunning) Shockey. She graduated from Washington High School in . Martha was united in marriage to Alvin Horak in at St. James Church in Washington.

Martha lived most of her life in Washington County where she was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church. She lived in Casper, in while her husband was in Air Force training. When Alvin was sent to England, Martha returned to Washington, Iowa, to live with family and worked at Curran and Carris Company. Upon Alvin’s return from service, they began farming northeast of Washington. With her four children growing up, she found employment at Sears in the Mail Order Department and Ward as Credit Manager. Martha and Alvin enjoyed card parties with their “gang” which lasted decades. The also enjoyed their special family gatherings and casino visits with the Steeles.

She is survived by her daughter, Chrystal Leverenz of San Francisco, CA; son, Stephen Horak of Cave Junction, OR; and daughter, Julie Horak and husband of Iowa City, IA; grandchildren: Darrin Morgan of San Francisco, CA; Shellee Brassard and husband Mark of Las Vegas, NV; Nick Griffin of Iowa City, IA; and Tony Griffin of Iowa City, IA; great-grandchildren: Jessica Pankrantz of Boise, ID and Amanda Brassard of Las Vegas, NV; two nephews, Ron Steele and Randy Steele and one niece Sara Steele Jaeger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2002; daughter, Sherry Horak in 1973; sister, Dorothy Steele and husband Clifford.
