Abraham Shockey – Research
A Little History Rundown from Kaylene
How Kaylene ties into Abraham Shockey:
I started doing genealogy research in the 1970’s, before the internet and before computers, so a lot of my documents are still paper and have not been scanned into the computer, hopefully soon.
DNA tests can be found on my WikiTree profile (linked above).
My father was Arthur Silvester or Bill was born in 1923 in Chase Co., Nebraska and died in 2011 in Chase Co., Nebraska. I have his birth certificate, marriage license and death certificate.
My grandmother was Hattie Bevans who was born in 1892 in Jansen, Jefferson, Nebraska and died in 1945 in Champion, Chase, Nebraska. I have her marriage licence from Fairbury, Jefferson, Nebraska in 1917.
My great grandmother was Mary Ellen Moon was born in 1860 in Lineville, Wayne, Iowa and died in 1943 in Fairbury, Jefferson, Nebraska. Her father, William Moon’s will in Wayne Co., Iowa lists his daughter, Mary Ellen Moon, in Nebraska.
My 2nd great grandmother was Susannah Shockey was born 1829 and died 1901, buried in Shields Cemetery, Woodland Township, Decatur, Iowa.
My 3rd great grandfather was Abraham or Abram Shockey and his wife, Susan Rector (I don’t have a marriage license). Abram was born either in Fayette Co., PA or in VA on 22 Feb 1788 and died 23 Feb 1863 in Wayne Co., Iowa. He is buried in the Lewisburg Cemetery. It is believed that his wife Susan is buried there, but there is no stone. FindAGrave lists her parents as Charles Rector (1761-1852) and Sarah Chapman (1762-1823). There is room on either side of Abram for Susan to be buried there, and then on the side is one of William and Susannah (Shockey) Moon’s infants.
FindaGrave lists Abram’s father as Johann Abraham Shockey (1755-1861) and Margaret Shockey (1763-1850). It also lists Abram as being born in VA.
I contacted the person who put the information on FindAGrave and she thought she had some information regarding supporting documents, but I have not heard back from her.
Life of Abraham
Life of Abraham Shockey, father of Susannah (Shockey) Moon.
Here is a map tracing the locations I have in Abraham (Abram) Shockey’s life.
- (green dot aka A) I have him buried in Lewisburg Cemetery, Humeston, Wayne Co., Iowa, also there is a burial in Green Bay Cemetery, Wayne Co., Iowa.
- (B) 1860 census – Richmond, Wayne, IA
- (B) 1856 census – Clay, Wayne, IA.
- (C) 1850 census – Clinton, Shelby, Ohio
- (D) 1840 census – Beaver, PAaaaaaa
- 1830 census – Addison, Somerset, PA
- (E) Marriage on 10 Sep 1800 – Mason Co., KY to Susan Rector
- Three possible birth locations: (H) Berkeley, James, VA, (G) Fayette City, Fayette, PA, or, (F) Kanawha, WV.
1. If you look at the map, (A) in Wayne Co., IA going back to (C) in Clinton, OH then to (D) back to Beaver Co., PA looks logical.
2. The most logical birth location with these places would be Fayette Co., PA (G).
3. The WV (F) & VA (H) locations look out of the way, and the marriage in KY (E) really looks out of place.
FindAGrave
FindAGrave – Lewisburg Cemetery
This shows Abram Shockey buried in Lewisburg Cemetery, Humeston, Wayne Co., Iowa. The tombstone lists birth date as 22 Feb 1788 – Virginia and death as 23 Feb 1863 – Wayne Co., Iowa. His parents are listed as Abraham Shockey (1755-1861) and Margaret Shockey (1763-1850), spouse as Susan Rector Shockey (1789-1855). Children: Abraham Shockey (1813-1887), Nelson Shockey (1820- ), Adaline Shockey Martin (1825-1880), John W Shockey (1828-1894), and Susannah Shockey Moon (1829-1901). Also lists siblings: Margaret Shockey Markley (1793-1890) and Catherine Shockey Donley (1805-1871).
FindAGrave – Green Bay Cemetery
This shows an Abraham Shockey possibly buried in Green Bay Cemetery, Humestown, Wayne Co., Iowa. There is no picture of the tombstonev. It lists birth as 1763 – Bucks Co., PA and death as 1 Nov 1782 – Franklin Co., PA. He could have died in PA and been brought to Wayne County, IA for burial but I don’t think that happened in the 1780’s.
It states that he died during the Revolutionary War. He served in the third regiment, Maryland Line, having enlisted on 1 Aug 1780. He died, leaving a widow and three children.
Father is listed as John Christopher Shockey; Mother as Susannah Moore; Wife as Elizabeth M. Christian; Children: Christian William Shockey I, Catherine Shockey & Ann Shockey Barrick.
Ann Shockey Barrick is listed as 1780 – PA and death 18 May 1867 – Licking Co., OH. Buried in Liberty Cemetery (no stone photo)
- This Abraham is not my Abraham and I question if he is in Green Bay Cemetery — Will have to look at the cemetery next time I am in Wayne Co., Iowa and also look in my books on the cemeteries to see if this same info is in the books.
Research in the Census
The 1860 census lists Abrahama age 72 born about 1788 in Virginia – living in Richmond, Wayne, Iowa. He is in the household of his son, John (b. about 1827 PA) and his wife, Nancy and their children: John, James, Martha & Josiah F.
The 1856 Iowa state census lists Abraham Shockey age 66 born about 1790 in Virginia – living in Clay, Wayne, Iowa and that he is widowed. He is the only one in the household, but on the same page are William Moon, Susannah Moon, Pamina Moon, Isaac Moon, Jane Moon, John Moon, Nancy Shockey, John Shockey and then Abraham Shockey.
The 1850 census for Clinton, Shelby, Ohio lists – A Shockey or Abraham / Abram age 62 born about 1788 in Virginia. In the household with him is Susan Shockey (age 61, b. VA), John W Shockey (age 22, b. PA), Sarah Shockey (age 17, b. PA), Nancy Shockey (age 13, b. OH), William Moon (age 24, b. OH), and Susan Moon (age 21, b. OH).
The 1840 census for Beaver, Beaver, Pennsylvania lists Abraham, his household has:
- 1 male – 10 to 14
- 1 male – 20 to 29
- 1 male – 50-59
- 1 female – 5 to 9
- 1 female – 15-19
- 1 female – 40-49
I have Abraham’s family as follows:
–Name– | Born | Age – 1840 | –Birth Place– | –Notes– |
---|---|---|---|---|
Abraham | 1788 | 52 | Fayette City, Fayette, PA | One male 50-59 |
Susan | 1789 | 51 | Hampshire Co., VA | One female 40-49 |
Abraham | 1813 | 27 | PA | Married in 1828 (so should be listed separately) |
Eliza A | 1817 | 23 | Somerset, PA | married in 1835 |
Nelson | 1820 | 20 | PA | probably the 1 male 20-29 |
Adaline | 1825 | 15 | Somerset, PA | One female 15-19 |
John W | 1827 | 13 | Somerset, PA | One male 10 to 14 |
Susannah A | 1829 | 11 | Somerset, PA | |
Sarah | 1833 | 7 | PA | One female 5 to 9 |
Nancy Jane | 1837 | 3 | Crawford, OH |
I will have to look at this some more, I think when I was in Beaver County that this did not look like it was my Abraham.
The Abraham Shockey in Beaver Co. is there in 1830, 1840, & 1850 – this can not be mine because he is in Shelby Co., Ohio in 1850.
The 1830 census lists Abraham Shockey in Addison, Somerset, PA with:
- 1 male – under 5
- 1 male – 5 to 9
- 1 male – 30-39
- 3 females – under 5
- 1 female – 15-19
- 1 female – 30-39
Marriage
The 10 Sep 1800 marriage of Nancy Rector to Abraham Shockey is not my relatives marriage. My Abraham was born in 1788, which would have made him 12 in 1800 and he is married to Susan Rector who was born in 1789 which would make her 11 in 1800.This marriage reference needs to be removed from Abraham Shockey and Susan Rector. The first child I have for them was born in 1813, so they were probably married around 1810.

Abraham Shockey b. 1755
The balance appears to be the children’s ages in 1855 at Abraham’s 100th birthday.Margaret’s age when children were born (using burial marker). There is no Abraham listed as a child, but MY Abraham was born in 1788 when Margaret would have been 25.

Abraham Shockey in Beaver County, Pennsylvania
Abram S. Hall, carriage manufacturer, Beaver Falls, was born in Beaver, Nov. 11, 1840, and is a son of John L. and Eliza (Shockey) Hall. His father was a native of Kittanning, PA and with three brothers, David, Solomon and Richard, came to Beaver county about 1817. Where he followed the occupation of a tailor for most of his life. His wife was a daughter of Abraham Shockey, formerly of Hollidaysberg, PA, and a pioneer tailor of Beaver county. Mr. Hall had ten children who grew to maturity; Mary J, Catherine, Eliza, Matilda, Amelia, Abram S., Richard, Dallas, Frank and John. Abram S. was reared in Beaver, learned his trade with C. West & Co. of Pittsburgh, and worked as a journeyman several years. He was in business at New Brighton three years, located in Beaver Falls in 1874. And with his brother Richard embarked in their present business. They are said to be the only carriage manufacturers in Beaver county who have continued successfully in the business for a length of time. In 1873 Mr Hall married Ellen Nippert, of New Brighton, by whom he has three children living: Florence, Ellen and Lillie.

Tax lists for Beaver County list an Abraham and Abraham Jr., I would guess that these are the two Abrahams listed above and not my Abraham. I would guess that the Mary listed as his wife in the will is Mary Henry listed on the 1850 census in his household, and the Mary Shockey listed on the 1860 census as his wife. I would believe that he was married before and that wife is the mother of his 3 children.
My Abraham and 3 of his children are in Wayne County, Iowa on the 1856 Census for 4 years to 3 years to 2 years. I do not believe that they were in Beaver County, Pennsylvania.
To complicate things, another Abraham Shockey married Nancy Rector also in the Ohio census for 1850 there are two William Moon’s married to “Susan.”
