John Christian Schocke *
John Christian Schocke, son of Lewis and Rachel Schocke (nee Floor), was born December 5, 1886. He was the oldest of a family of eight children of whom there are three brothers and two sisters left to mourn his death. He was united in marriage to Mary E. Mergenthal November 16, 1858, and to this union were born six chilren, Frank J., William F., Charles E., Louisa R Meyncke, Frances A. Deutsch and Anna C. Posey. Frank, Louisa Meyncke, Frances Deutsch and Anna Posey survive him. His wife proceded him December 21, 1894. He has twenty-three living grandchildren, and six dead, and seven great-grandchildren to mourn their loss.
John C. Schocke was born at Cheviot, Ohio. Shortly after his birth his parents moved to this state and settled near Brookville and the greater part of his life was spent in Franklin County.
In 1864 he volunteered his services to his country and was honorably discharged at the close of the war.
The last few years of his life he spent with his children. Mr. Schocke had been in poor health for several years, but had only been confined to his bed the last five weeks of his illness. He answered the summons of the Angel of Death at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Posey of Atlanta, Indiana, January 20, 1911, at the age of 75 years, 1 month and 15 days. Mr. Schocke was a familiar figure in our community and ever yone was his friend.
