Velma Doman *

Velma Catherine Webster , 85, of Baker, WV passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024 at Allegany Health Nursing & Rehab, Cumberland, MD.
Velma was born on December 12, in her grandmother’s bed in Wardensville, WV and attended Wardensville school through the 7th grade. Her family then moved to Moorefield, WV and she graduated from Moorefield High School in the Class of 1957. She always said that year was the for music and classic cars. After graduation she and some of her school friends moved to Washington, DC where she worked for GEICO Insurance Company for nearly 10 years. She also attended Patricia Modeling and Finishing School, as she said “for self-improvement” and she also did some modeling.
She married Billy Burke Doman on June 11, 1966 and moved to Fort Ashby, WV where they were happily devoted to their community and family for 33 years. They were members of Trinity United Methodist Church where she enjoyed serving as a Sunday School teacher for 25 years and led numerous Bible study groups. She made fond memories with her son in Cub Scout Pack 69 and served as a Den Mother for 10 years and even served a term as Chair of the Pack. She was a dutiful charter member of the Fort Ashby Lioness Club and served terms as its President and Secretary. She was recognized as a member of the United Women in Faith (formerly United Methodist Women) group at Fort Ashby’s Trinity United Methodist Church for over 50 years and served terms as President and Secretary. She also served 8 years on the District Team. She worked along-side her husband Billy to build a business called Doman’s Seamless Gutters, which they operated for over 25 years.
After retirement they moved to Bean Settlement, WV where they joined the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed being the devotional leader and a Sunday school teacher at Asbury from until 2024 and became a certified lay speaker. She served 8 years as a Board Member at the E.A. Hawse Health Center in Baker, WV. For all of her contributions, the Bean Settlement Ruritan Club presented her with their Senior Citizen of the Year Award in .
As Velma said in a hand-written note to her family, “Jesus wants His light to shine through you–I pray that I shared that light through my skills and talents–let your light shine for Jesus. Matthew 5:16”
She was a gifted administrator and leader, and loved her family and community. She enjoyed cruises and traveling, driving stick shift British sports cars, riding on the back of her husband’s Harley, hosting parties and corn roasts, attending Red Hat parties, eating at restaurants and singing with her friends. She was also a wonderful cook and was always willing to serve-up any wild game or fish that the family brought home from the field or stream. Energetic and always eager to have fun, she could go from pajamas to a classy outfit with matching accessories and perfect hair with a few minutes notice.
Velma was the daughter of the late Jesse Willard and Lola Catherine Webster. She was preceded in death by her husband Billy Burke Doman, infant twin son and daughter, infant daughter, and brother Willard “Joe” Webster (Betty). She is survived by her son David Burke Doman and his wife Krista, grandson Nathaniel Burke Doman (Tessa); granddaughter Noelle Kristine Lansford (Josiah), sister Betty , brother Kenneth Webster (Nancy), five nieces, and four nephews.
Visitation will be at McKee Funeral Home, 17434 Route 55, Baker, WV from 6-8 PM on Thursday, August 22. A funeral service will begin at 11 AM on Friday August 23 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Bean Settlement WV with Pastor Gregory Hicks officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband Billy in the Asbury Cemetery adjacent to the church.
