MARION — A 23-year-old Marion man was killed in a car crash early Tuesday just southwest of Marion, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.
Brent Whalen was pronounced dead after troopers believe he missed a curve, drove off the left side of the road and was thrown from his car early Tuesday on Bellefontaine Avenue east of Road, according to a press release issued by the patrol.
Emergency dispatchers did not receive a call about the crash until about 6:35 a.m., and investigators found that the crash must have happened around 1:30, the release says.
Whalen had been driving on Bellefontaine Avenue when the crash happened, the release says. His car, a 2011 Volkswagen, drove off the road and hit a utility pole, a culvert and a tree, according to the release.
The release says Whalen was not wearing a seatbelt.
There have been at least two other injury crashes since 2012 on Bellefontaine Avenue east of Campbell Road in which drivers have failed to negotiate the curve and gone off the side of the road, according to records from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Both crashes happened in the middle of the night, and crash reports note the road was not lit.
In April 2017, a 28-year-old woman was injured after she tried to go around the curve, went over the center line, overcorrected and then went off the right side of the road, according to the crash report.
In 2012, a 30-year-old man also was injured after losing control of his vehicle just east of Campbell Road on Bellefontaine Avenue and going off the side of the road, according to the crash report.
The Marion Township Fire Department and EMS, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and First Advanced EMS assisted the patrol at the scene of Tuesday morning’s crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
