Charlotte P. Hughes
Charlotte was the daughter of Henry COSTON and Blanche WILLIAMS. She married Edwin P. HUGHES 24 November 1941 in Pentwater, Oceana County, Michigan.
They were the parents of five (5) daughters:
Sharon HUGHES BUDNIK
Nadine HUGHES LATSCH
Linda HUGHES DUCHON (Twin)
Laura HUGHES HENDERSON (Twin)
Terese HUGHES CHEPPO
Charlotte graduated from Mount Mercy Academy and then moved to Manistee for nurses training at Mercy Hospital, where she later began working after graduation.
While raising their daughters, she served as president or in other volunteer capacities for school, church and club functions, and carried this gift of giving throughout her life. Charlotte was cited in 1967 by the Michigan Senate as one of Michigan’s Outstanding Women, and in 1969 by the V.F.W. Walsh Post #4499 as Manistee Outstanding Citizen. She has also been awarded the Tiffany Award from the National Red Cross in 1984, which is the highest award given to anyone by that organization. In 1985, she was cited by the Michigan House of Representatives for her work in the community as one of Michigan’s Outstanding Women, given the Schoedel Award for community work from the Manistee Recreation Association, and in 1991 she received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Manistee County United Way.
She was a communicant of Guardian Angels Catholic Church, in Manistee, and in the past held many positions within the Church. She was a former member of the Catholic Daughters, and the National Council of Catholic Women, a past president of the Holy Family Society, Saint Vincent De Paul Society, Guardian Angels Home and School League and also a past Parish President. Charlotte held many positions within the community, as well as being a former member of Business and Professional Women and the Junior Lakeside Club. She was a past president of the Mercy Community Hospital Auxiliary and the Walsh Post #4499 Ladies Auxiliary. She was the Executive Director of the Manistee County chapter of the American Red Cross, chairman of the Manistee County Jury Board, and an authorized agent for the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund and the Executive Director of the United Way. Needless to say, every part of her life was that of service. To Charlotte, work was a labor of love.
Mass and burial were held on 11 December 2006.
