Henry H. Shockey

H. Shockey, Jr., 93, of Sewickley, formerly of Berlin, Irwin and Bridgeport, Virginia, died April 1, in his Sewickley home following a valiant year-long cancer battle and a heart attack. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Kathleen Boger Shockey of Meyersdale.

He is survived by his son Robert H. (Bob) Shockey (wife Diane M. Shockey) of West Lafayette, ; his daughter: Kathleen M. (Kathy) Schoffstall (husband Kent R. Schoffstall) of Sewickley; five grandchildren: Elizabeth Morrell, David Shockey, Sarah Shockey, Kurt Schoffstall and Brent Schoffstall; and three great grandchildren: Alistair Morrell, Jack Shockey and Shockey.

Henry was a graduate of Berlin Brothersvalley High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree from Salem University of Salem, at age 49. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an MP in Italy from 1944 to .  Career wise, Henry was a petroleum engineer, overseeing natural gas storage and transmission for Consolidated Natural Gas Company (now Dominion Energy). 

He was an excellent craftsman in woodworking, having made many beautiful and useful items, such as tables, clocks, bookcases and toys. He was also an excellent problem solver and handyman.  He was an avid outdoor enthusiast who loved to and hunt.  Henry loved to golf and played many rounds with his son Bob and grandson Kurt. As described by friends and associates, he was a kind, gentle and friendly man, with a subtle sense of humor.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, a small private graveside service for the family will be held Sunday April 5.  A memorial celebration of Henry’s life will be held at a later date.  Memorial contributions can be directed in his name to Purdue Christian Campus House, 1000 West State Street, West Lafayette, IN 47906 (pcch.org), where his grandson is a pastor.
