Melvin L. Harshman *
MELVIN L. HARSHMAN, 69, of Star Route 1, Augusta, W.Va., formerly of Blue Ridge Summit, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va., at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 26. His death was attributed to a heart attack.
Born May 4, 1918, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Amos and Reathie (Wolf) Harshman. He lived most of his life in the Waynesboro and Rouzerville areas.
He served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II.
Prior to his retirement in 1980, he was employed as a carpenter in the maintenance department at Fort Richie for more than 35 years.
He was active in Boy Scout work in Hagerstown and Augusta for a number of years.
His first wife, Mrs. Anna M. (Staley) Gossert Harshman, died in February 1976.
He and his second wife, were married in April 1978, and had lived in Augusta since his retirement.
While living in the Waynesboro area, he attended the Fairview Avenue Brethren in Christ Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six stepchildren: Blue Ridge Summit; serving with the U.S. Air Force at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey; North Pole, Alaska; Greencastle; both of Chambersburg.
Also surviving are 15 stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Chambersburg; and a sister, Waynesboro.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Grove Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lynn Thursh officiating. Burial will be in Strang’s Cemetery.
Friends may call at the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and at the Grove Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
