Ronald Hammond *
Ronald B. “Ron” Hammond, age 73, of Wooster, passed away suddenly, Friday April 26,2024 doing what
he loved most, watching his grandson’s baseball game.
Ron was born on April 6,1951 in Chicago, (Blue Island) Illinois to Richard Benjamin and Anna Mae (Vogel)
Hammond.
He married Sandra S. “Sandy” Shockey on May 26, 1973 in Ames, Iowa, She Survives.
Ron received a B.S., M.S., and PhD degrees in Entomology from Iowa State University, Ames Iowa,
graduating in 1979. He was hired by The Ohio State University (OARDC) as a Field Crop Entomologist. He
did research, as well as taught graduate classes in Columbus.
Later in his career he did research on Slugs, which gave him the opportunity to travel internationally. Plus, it was fun to laugh about working with Slugs. He retired in 2014.
He was a former president of the Wooster Exchange Club, enjoyed building model railroads and was an
avid reader and loved watching movies.
He was actively involved in his sons’ sports by attending games, being a Cub Scout Leader, and being actively involved in Swim Parents. He seldom missed a hockey game. He was proud of his Ohio State football tickets, working many years to finally get 50 yard seats.
He carried on his involvement with family by being involved with his grandsons’ whenever possible.
In addition to his wife of 50 years, he is survived by his sons, Shawn M. Hammond of Mayfield Heights,
Ohio, and Chad M. Hammond of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Tyler and Brody Hammond and a
brother, Richard (Jan) Hammond of Indianapolis, Indiana; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Ron is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, Harry and Harriette Shockey and his sister-in-law, Cindy
VanderMaten.
It was his previous wish that there be no public services. A private celebration of his life will take place at
a later date, at the convenience of the family.
