Virtue May Clopper

VIRTUE () , 87, of Smithsburg, died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, in the County Hospital, Hagerstown.   Born Nov. 15, , on the Shockey homestead at Ringgold, Md., she was the daughter of the late Amos and Laura (Barkdoll) Shockey.   She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Clopper, in 1987.   She graduated from Waynesboro High School in and from Western College in . She did graduate work at the University of Maryland.   Mrs. Clopper was a teacher of languages at Washington Academy in Princess Anne and at Smithsburg High School.   She was part owner of Clopper’s Orchard in Smithsburg for more than 50 years.   Mrs. Clopper was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg, and its Mary and Martha Sunday School class.   She was a member of the Washington County Teachers Association and the National Teachers Association. She was also an avid bridge player.   Mrs. Clopper is survived by a daughter, Priscilla Clopper Harsh of Smithsburg; a son, Robert Benjamin Clopper of Smithsburg; and four grandsons.   Mrs. Clopper was the last of her immediate family.   Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg, with Pastor Mark Walters and Marty Roberson officiating. Burial will be in the Ringgold Cemetery.   The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services in the church on Sunday. The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 210, or to Smithsburg Emergency Medical Service, P.O. Box 411, both of Smithsburg. Md. 21783.
